History Made at Kai Tak: Stefan Pereira’s Heroics Seal Victory for Hong Kong

It was a night to remember at the newly opened Kai Tak Stadium as Stefan Pereira etched his name into Hong Kong football history. In front of a roaring crowd of 42,000 fans, Pereira scored the match-winning goal against India in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers — the first-ever goal by a Hong Kong player in the iconic new venue.

 

“I cannot explain the feeling,” said Pereira, still soaking in the moment after the final whistle. “It’s amazing, amazing feeling. See these people — the celebration, the screaming. They love, nice, totally, totally. You know, I didn’t imagine this would happen today. So, very good tournament.”

 

When asked how he kept his composure during such a historic and high-pressure moment, Pereira admitted the weight of the occasion hadn’t fully sunk in yet. “I think right now, I don’t know this,” he laughed. “I’m still excited over the game, excited for the win. Maybe in the future when I look back at this history, then I’ll think differently. But now, the most important thing is the three points, and the atmosphere. The 42,000 football fans — their celebration gave us more than just three points. These are important points for our journey in the Asian Cup qualifiers.”

 

 

 

Pereira’s match-winning goal came from the penalty spot, executed in a unique, nerve-wracking style — a slow run-up followed by a cheeky hop before calmly slotting the ball home. It was a technique that caught the attention of fans and pundits alike.

 

“Yes, this is my style,” he said confidently. “I train a lot on that, and I have 100% confidence I can score all the penalties like that. That’s how the coaches trust me. I’ve trained hard for this moment.”

 

But beyond the goal and the result, Pereira was clearly moved by the turnout and the electric atmosphere in the stadium.
