Former Liverpool and Netherlands legend Dirk Kuyt believes Asian football is rapidly closing the gap with the world’s elite, with Japan singled out as one of the teams capable of troubling traditional powerhouses at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to Junpiter Futbol during the opening of the Official Liverpool FC Retail Store at Jewel Changi Airport, Kuyt shared his thoughts on the growth of Asian football when asked about the region’s representatives heading into the global showpiece.
“Asian football is definitely strong,” said Kuyt. “I am from Netherlands and we are grouped together with Japan in the World Cup. Japan will be a very, very tough opponent. If you really follow Asian football, especially at National Team level, you see them grow a lot.”
The former Liverpool forward, widely regarded as one of the club’s biggest big-game players after scoring crucial goals throughout his Anfield career, believes Asian nations are now capable of matching top teams on football’s biggest stage.
“So I’m expecting a lot from all the Asian teams this World Cup,” he added. “And we have to be careful of the Asian teams, especially Japan, as they are coming closer and closer to match the rest at the highest level now.”

The event in Singapore also marked the official unveiling of Liverpool FC’s new 2026/27 home kit by adidas. Inspired by the iconic adidas strip worn during the Reds’ memorable 1989/90 title-winning campaign, the new design brings together elements of Liverpool’s past and present, reimagining one of the club’s most celebrated kits for a new generation of supporters.
Many Liverpool fans gathered at Jewel Changi Airport for the launch event, welcoming Kuyt as he made appearances, interacted with supporters and celebrated the opening of the club’s latest official retail presence in Asia.
