Courts Young Lions was in search of their first win in the Great Eastern Yeo’s S.League 2013 when they hosted a fast-improving Woodlands Wellington last evening at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
The Young Lions did not take long to show their hunger as their Canadian import, Sherif El-Masri (no. 32) scored a curler from just outside the penalty box as early as 9th minute into the game! The goal was scored with a little help of deflection off a Rams’ defender but credit went to the lively Canadian. In fact, the Young Lions nearly double their lead when Faiz Salleh (no. 17) saw his one on one shot parried away by the Rams’ custodian, Yazin Yasin (no. 18) in the 42nd minute. The game looked bright for the Young Lions as they went into the half time break leading 1-0.
Instructions given in the dressing room had certainly inspired the Rams as we saw a different Woodlands Wellington for the second half. The Rams nearly pull level in the 54th minute when Chang Jo Yoon (no. 7)’s shot hit the upright of the Young Lions’ goal. The very next minute, Moon SoonHo (no. 10) attempted a long shot where it was safely recovered by the Young Lions’ keeper, Rudy Khairullah (no. 1) when he noticed the keeper was off his line.
The Rams showed more urgency in their movement and they were finally rewarded in the 59th minute when the Goal.com Player of the Month for March, Khalid Hamdaoui (no. 5) put Moon SooHo through with a defence-splitting pass, Moon showed great composure and sent a great grounder into the back of the Young Lions’ net!
Acknowledging guiding the Young Lions as one of the most challenging tasks, head coach Aide Iskandar continued to encourage his boys from the side line. However, the Rams from the north showed no sign of sympathy. 81st minute, Chang Jo Yoon dribbled down the left flank and saw his effort deflected off Young Lions, Sheikh Abdul Hadi (no. 15) and into the goal! Just when we thought the final score could be 2-1 in favor of Woodlands Wellington even though 6 minutes of extra time were given, super sub Goh Swee Swee (no. 9) took on the Young Lions’ defence and sent a shot from 20 yards out into the back of the net in the 93rd minute! That should be a great contender for goal of the season!
Then, the game was all over for the Young Lions as they suffered their 7 consecutive defeats in as many games. While on the other side of the pitch, Woodlands Wellington moved up to joint 3rd position, 11 points, with Tanjong Pagar and Brunei DPMM.
